Navigating Digital Transformation: A Partner for What’s Next

If you've been following digital transformation conversations, you've likely seen it framed as something high-stakes: “make or break,” “pass or fail.” This framing can feel overwhelming, especially when your operations, data, connectivity, industrial technologies, AI, analytics, and digital platforms are all evolving simultaneously.

But digital transformation isn’t about fearing failure. It’s about gaining clarity.

Success doesn’t always go to those with the biggest budgets or boldest gambles. Instead, it belongs to organisations with a clear roadmap, genuine organisational buy-in, and the right expertise engaged from day one. These fundamentals differentiate projects that deliver lasting value from those that stall.

For many organisations, the challenge lies in approaching change with confidence. That’s where SAGE becomes a valuable partner, providing guidance and the support needed to navigate digital transformation successfully. Whether you’re just beginning to explore what digital could mean for your operations or looking to refine an existing strategy, the right partnership can make all the difference.

That's why we are strengthening our support for clients navigating this stage, with a newly created role: Head of Digital.

Keep reading to understand what this means for you, and to get to know Gareth Williams, Head of Digital at SAGE Group.

Q. Tell us a bit about your career journey, what brought you here, and what are you focused on in your new role?

Gareth-Williams-HeadshotGareth: I started my career in IT working at one of Australia's largest dairy companies, on highly technical systems and large-scale technology projects. Over time, those projects began to bridge the gap between IT and operational technology (OT), before IT and OT convergence was even a common phrase.

That journey led me to Nukon, SAGE’s specialists in Digital Enablement, where over 10 years I moved from a technical delivery focus into management consulting and helping organisations shape their digital transformation strategies. I’ve worked with some of Australia’s leading manufacturers, utilities and infrastructure organisations, giving me a real appreciation of the challenges these businesses face and what it takes to turn technology investments into outcomes.

The exciting part of my role now is bringing together both sides of the conversation, combining deep technical understanding with business strategy and customer needs. It’s about connecting technology, people, and operations to help customers solve real problems and deliver meaningful outcomes.

Q. Is there a project or outcome you’re especially proud of?

Gareth: One project I'm especially proud of is a product traceability and authentication project, my first at Nukon. It was a baptism of fire, delivering a product authentication and traceability solution to prove the authenticity of infant formula while navigating complex OT and IT integration, global teams, offshore delivery, and agile ways of working.

It taught me a huge amount about PLCs, control systems, and managing complex stakeholder environments. I still keep a tin of infant formula with the QR code on my desk as a reminder of that journey and everything I learnt.

Q. What does the new Head of Digital role mean for SAGE’s customers in practical terms?

Gareth: The Head of Digital role brings the best of SAGE and Tetra Tech together to help customers solve challenges in new ways. We look beyond a traditional engineering approach and combine technology, operational expertise, data, and business understanding to deliver solutions that fit the way customers work.

A recent customer conversation highlighted this well. They had spoken with a technology vendor who could provide the platform, but recognised the challenge was much bigger than implementing a new system. The customer needed support to understand how the platform fits into their operations, the rest of their tech stack, what can be done to help their people adopt it, and how they achieve value.

Our focus is to start with the customer challenge, not the technology, and bring the right expertise together to deliver meaningful outcomes.

Q. What are some of the biggest challenges we’re facing across industry at the moment?

Gareth: It's interesting because regardless of whether we're talking to manufacturers, utilities, food and beverage companies, or energy and infrastructure organisations, the conversations are remarkably similar. Everyone is facing many of the same challenges, but each organisation is at a different stage of solving them.

The biggest theme we’re seeing is data. Organisations have more information than ever, but the challenge is unlocking that data, connecting it, and turning it into meaningful insights that improve decision-making and operations.

There’s also a real interest in understanding what others are doing successfully. Customers want to learn from their peers, understand which approaches are working, and ensure they are moving in the right direction.

Q. What types of digital transformation opportunities do you see growing across the industries it serves?

Gareth: The biggest opportunities we're seeing are connecting assets, unlocking operational data, and creating greater visibility across the enterprise. Organisations want to bring data from legacy and modern systems into a single operational view, better understand what that data is telling them, explore emerging technologies such as industrial AI, and build the workforce capability needed for Industry 4.0.

SAGE is seeing growing interest in operational intelligence, and we’re helping customers turn data into better decisions and outcomes, backed by strategic technology partnerships and proven, repeatable industry solutions.

Q. How does SAGE ensure industrial digitalisation is aligned with real customer needs rather than just emerging technology trends?

Gareth: SAGE has always based our work around a simple principle: helping customers improve operational performance, not just implementing new technology. We're bringing together digital advisory, industrial automation, data, AI, operational intelligence and managed services into a single approach that connects strategy through to execution what we call "from boardroom to control room".

In practice, that means focusing on helping customers make better decisions with their operational data, improving asset and production performance, and creating long-term value from their digital investments. Rather than leading with technology, we start with business outcomes and work backwards to identify the right combination of people, process and technology to achieve them.

As operations become more interconnected and data-driven, the lines between engineering, IT, and consulting blur. Our cross-disciplinary fluency is exactly what industries need to successfully navigate OT/IT convergence and infrastructure modernisation.

Bringing together digital strategy, operational technology and technical delivery

Digital transformation is complex, but with clarity and the right partner, it becomes an opportunity. SAGE’s coordinated expertise, combining strategy, technology, and operational know-how, ensures you see measurable outcomes.
